An extractable from a syringe filter or any device for that matter, can be defined as any chemical that is present in your sample after filtering that was not there before. These extractables can be from the material itself such as threads or can be from the manufacturing process. No matter the source, these are considered undesirable.
Most of the time, the membrane is the source but it could be the polypropylene housing depending on the solvent you are filtering.
