Manufactured using a traditional octyl (C8) bonded phase on ultra-high purity silica and fully double end capped, it provides strong hydrophobic interactions while often offering lower retention than C18 phases. As a USP L7 equivalent phase, it is widely used for method replacement, method development, and routine analytical separations where balanced retention and selectivity are desired.
68308-05P-4 is an HPLC column packed with 3 µm RP C8 Octyl™ particles featuring a 100 Å pore size in a 4.0 mm ID x 50 mm format. The short 50 mm length is optimized for rapid analyses and increased sample throughput, while the 3 µm particles provide greater efficiency and sharper peaks than comparable 5 µm columns. Typical operating flow rates are approximately 0.8–1.5 mL/min depending on mobile phase composition, temperature, and instrument configuration.
This column is particularly useful for hydrophobic and neutral compounds in reversed-phase chromatography and is especially well suited for long-chain fatty acid analysis. The C8 chemistry offers excellent retention and selectivity while often reducing excessive retention compared to more hydrophobic phases. As with all 3 µm columns, backpressure will be higher than comparable 5 µm columns, and methods using longer columns with viscous mobile phases may approach system pressure limitations.
