How does RSA glass autosampler vials compare against siliconized or silanized vials for Pharma applications?

RSA™ is different from siliconized or silanized vials in some ways and similar in others. It depends on why you are using siliconized vials if you should use RSA or RSA-Pro™ (Deactivated vials).

If it is for proteins or peptides that stick to the vials, you may need the RSA-Pro™ Vials which we offer. Some proteins stick to the glass and not to the silanols or the silicate layer in ordinary glass. However, due to the silicate layer and "glass dust" in ordinary glass, silanizing is never 100% effective. Customers that need silanized glass find the RSA-Pro Vials to be incredibly effective. The reason is so much better or more complete coverage and no delamination. Sample recovery is usually much better than ordinary silanized vials.

Some points to consider:
 

1. RSA™ glass eliminates interaction with the silicate/silanols and reduces overall "interactions".

2. RSA is much less hydrophobic and sometimes, depending on the temperature and humidity, the RSA glass does not have a meniscus which is due to the surface tension from hydrophobic/hydrophilic interactions.

3. For Pharma applications one needs to address the delamination issues of the silicate in ordinary borosilicate, pharmaceutical grade glass. RSA™ does not delaminate.

4. RSA vials do not need to undergo a "cleaning step" to remove the silicate powder or particles that is formed with ordinary vials since the precision manufacturing process does not produce any silicate. Introduction of any liquids or air into the vials during any cleaning process will only re-introduce organic contaminants that can be problematic for LCMS or any sensitive sample.

                      

There have been many cases where ordinary pharma grade silanized vials were used to stop the pH drift or the adsorption due to the silicate/silanols and the regular RSA performed much better.
